Messianic Psalms
Psalm 22

A Prophecy of CHRIST'S Crucifixion

Psalm 22 is one of the best-known MESSIANIC Psalms because the Passion accounts in the Gospels refer to it quite often. Psalm 22 was the main resource used by the New Testament writers as they attempted to portray the life, death and resurrection of JESUS to show that He was the MESSIAH.
(1). Forsaken because of sins of others. Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? (KJV) Fulfilled: 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (KJV)

(2). My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? (KJV) Fulfilled: Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV)

(3). Darkness upon Calvary for three hours. Psalm 22:2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. (KJV)  Fulfilled: Matthew 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. (KJV) Mark 15:25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. (KJV) Mark 15:33-34 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34  And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?(KJV) Luke 23:44-45 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45  And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. (KJV)

(4). They shoot out the lip and shake the head. Psalm 22:7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, (KJV)  Fulfilled: Matthew 27:39-44 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40  And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41   Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42  He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43  He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44  The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. (KJV)

(5). He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him.  Psalm 22:8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. (KJV)  Fulfilled: Matthew 27:43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. (KJV)

(6). Born the Saviour. Psalm 22:9-10 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. 10  I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. (KJV) Fulfilled: Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. (KJV)

(7). They seek His death. Psalm 22:12-13 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. 13  They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. (KJV) Fulfilled: Matthew 26:3-4 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4  And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. (KJV) Matthew 26:59-65 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; 60  But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses, 61  And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days. 62  And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee? 63  But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64  Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65  Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. (KJV) John 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. (KJV)

(8). His blood poured out when they pierced His side.  Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. (KJV)  Fulfilled: John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. (KJV)

(9). Suffered agony on Calvary.  Psalm 22:14-15  I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. 15  My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. (KJV) Fulfilled: Matthew 27:46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV) Mark 15:34-37 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 35  And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. 36  And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. 37  And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. (KJV)

(10). He thirsted. Psalm 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. (KJV) Psalm 69:21 They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (KJV) Fulfilled: John 19:28  After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. (KJV) John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (KJV)

(11). They pierced His hands and His feet. Psalm 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. (KJV)
Fulfilled: John 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. (KJV)  John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced. (KJV)  John 20:25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. (KJV) John 20:27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. (KJV)

(12). Stripped Him before the stares of men.  Psalm 22:17-18 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18  They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. (KJV) Fulfilled: Luke 23:34-35 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. 35  And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. (KJV)

(13). They parted His garment.  Psalm 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. (KJV)  Fulfilled: John 19:23-24 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24  They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. (KJV)

(14). He committed Himself to God. Psalm 22:20-21Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21  Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. (KJV) Fulfilled: Luke 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. (KJV)

(15). Satanic power bruising the Redeemer's heel.  Psalm 22:20-21Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21  Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. (KJV) Fulfilled: Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; (KJV)

(16). His Resurrection declared. Psalm 22:22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. (KJV)  Fulfilled: John 20:17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. (KJV)

(17). He shall be the governor of the nations. Psalm 22:27-28 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. 28  For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. (KJV) Fulfilled: Colossians 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (KJV) Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (KJV)

(18). It is finished. Psalm 22:31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. (KJV)  Fulfilled: John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. (KJV) Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (KJV) Hebrews 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; (KJV) Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (KJV) Hebrews 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. (KJV)

Theme: The crucifixion of CHRIST.

This is a portion of Scripture that makes me feel so inferior to even begin to bring my humble thoughts. On my own, I would fail completely, but with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT, I will comment on it. This Psalm is called the Psalm of the Cross, and is so called because it describes more accurately and thoroughly the crucifixion of CHRIST JESUS than any other place in the Bible. Psalm 22 parallels with Genesis 22 and Isaiah 53.

Many MESSIANIC Psalms picture CHRIST, but Psalm 22 seems to penetrate deep into JESUS’ thoughts and inner life. In Psalm 22, we see the horrible suffering of His suffering, because His soul is laid bare. The Gospels record the historical fact of His death, and some of the events that were present at His crucifixion; but only in Psalm 22 are His thoughts revealed. It has been the belief of many that the Lord JESUS, while on the cross, actually quoted the entire twenty-second Psalm. I agree because the seven last sayings that are given in the Gospels either appear in this Psalm or the emotional background for them is here.

Discouragement (22:1-10)

The SPIRIT of CHRIST, which was in all the TRUE prophets of GOD, testifies in this Psalm, so clearly and fully, of the sufferings of CHRIST JESUS, and the glory that would follow. We see a sorrowful withdrawal of GOD'S Presence. This could be applied to any child of GOD who is overwhelmed with grief and terror in this life on Earth. Feeling the departure of GOD’S Presence is the saints' worst affliction. To cry out, my GOD, why am I sick? why do I hurt? is that of discontent and worldliness. But, why hast thou forsaken me?  . . . that is words of a heart begging for help from the Lord GOD. This must be applied to CHRIST. In the first words, my God, my God . . . our precious SAVIOUR poured out His soul before GOD when He was on that cross (Mat.27:46). Since He was truly Man, CHRIST felt a natural reluctance to pass through such great sorrows . . . but His zeal and love was victorious. CHRIST declared the holiness of GOD, His heavenly FATHER, in His extreme sufferings, for never was any that hoped in Him, that were made ashamed of their hope; never was there any that searched for Him, that sought for Him in vain. What a tremendous thing JESUS did that day on the cross . . . for US! Psalm 22 is the prophecy of CHRIST'S horrendous sufferings and of His death on that horrendous cross.

Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? (KJV)

My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?  . . . GOD is the same GOD of CHRIST, as He is of mortal man. GOD had prepared a Body for His only begotten Son (Jn.3:16), gave Him a human nature (Isa.7:15; Jn.1:14); anointed it with the oil of gladness (Ps.45:7; Heb.1:9); sustained it under all His sorrows and sufferings, and then exalted Him to His own right Hand (Ps.110:5; Acts 5:31; Eph.1:20; Heb.1:3):, and CHRIST conducted Himself towards GOD as His covenant GOD. He prayed to Him, He believed in Him, He loved Him, and He obeyed Him. CHRIST expressed His faith in GOD when GOD hid His face from CHRIST, when He complains, Why hast thou forsaken me? This is not to be understood, as if the personal union of the divine and human natures were dissolved, or that the one was now separated from the other: because the fulness of the Godhead still dwelt bodily in Him (Col.2:9); nor did JESUS stop being the Object of His FATHER'S love; for He was so in the midst of ALL His sufferings. Dear one, His FATHER loved Him because He laid down His life for the sheep (Jn.10:11, 15; 1 Jn.3:16), nor was the principle of joy and comfort ever lost in Him, only the sense of it because He was now deprived of the gracious Presence of GOD, and the signs of GOD’S love to JESUS’ human soul. He felt a sense of GOD’S wrath, NOT for His own sins, because He had none (Isa.53:9; 2 Cor.5:21; Heb.4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet.2:22; 1 Jn.3:5), but for the sins of His people, and was for a while totally deprived of any help and comfort. All this was needed to make His Sacrifice acceptable for our sin . . . GOD’S one and only Plan was that CHRIST had the sins of His people imputed to Him . . . He must bear the full and whole punishment of them.
Why art thou so far from helping me? . . . He had not lost hope of help; He firmly believed He would have it, and therefore had it, but He did feel rejected for a while.
And from the words of my roaring? . . . which expresses the passion of His SPIRIT in crying to GOD, the exceeding greatness of His sorrows, and His excruciating pains and sufferings: this is what the writer means by His strong crying and tears (Heb.5:7); or the words of my roaring are far from my salvation . . . there is a great interval between the one and the other.

Psalm 22:2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. (KJV)

O my God, I cry in the daytime . . . the time of JESUS physical suffering on the cross, was in the daytime, but He also agonized mentally in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mat.26:36-42).
But thou hearest me not . . . and yet His FATHER always heard Him (Jn.11:41); even though He was not saved from dying, yet He was quickly delivered from the power of death, and so He was heard in that He feared (Heb.5:7).
And in the night season . . . He was also heard in the night when He was in the garden, grief-stricken and praying (Mat.26:36-42), the night when He was betrayed and seized. Even though the natural desires of JESUS’ human Soul were not heard and answered, that the cup might pass from Him (Mat.26:39, 42), yet His prayer in submission to the will of GOD was heard. It could well be considered here that the daytime and the night season could mean His incessant and continual prayer  . . . that CHRIST prayed always, day and night. There is no specific time for prayer, we can go 24/7 . . . any time!
And am not silent . . . but He continued to pray, even though it seemed to Him that He was not heard, nor answered. There is a great lesson here for us! There was no silence to Him . . . meaning that He had no rest from the grief and sorrow of what He knew was coming. There was no likeness to Him, for there are none like Him, no sorrow like HIS sorrow (Ps.77:2-6). NO one could have done what JESUS did on the cross! GOD appointed Him to do it (Jn.3;16-18), and He did it for us! Have you thanked Him for what He did for YOU?

Psalm 22:3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel. (KJV)

But thou art holy . . . although CHRIST thought He was not heard, even when He cried out earnestly, yet He would not lay any fault or unkindness to His FATHER . . . for He is Holy and can do nothing that is wrong. Again, a great lesson for us here.
O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel . . . either the place where Israel offered the sacrifices of praise to GOD, in the Tabernacle or Temple, the house of prayer and praise where GOD dwelt: or the true Israel of GOD praising Him. GOD dwells in the sanctuary where the praises, thanksgivings and sacrifices of His people are continually offered (Ps.19:14; 69:30-31; Rom.12:1; Heb.13:15).

Psalm 22:4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. (KJV)

Our fathers trusted in thee . . . this seems to refer to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, from whom our LORD descended (Mat.1:1-2); and to the people of Israel when in Egypt, in the times of the judges, and in all ages before the Coming of CHRIST, of whom, as concerning His being Man, or as to His human nature (Jn.1:14; Rom.9:5). Since GOD is the same unchanging GOD at all times, in relation to His people, CHRIST pleads in faith that, as GOD helped the fathers of old who trusted in Him, He would certainly help His trusting Child now. So too, we may also plead in our distresses. The deliverance of the covenant people out of their Egyptian bondage (Ex.12:26-27) is especially alluded to; also all the loving-kindnesses of the LORD toward Israel on many occasions (Isa.63:7).
They trusted . . . in the inseparable connection between trust in GOD and deliverance by GOD.
And thou didst deliver them . . . out of the hands of all their enemies, and out of all their sorrows and afflictions; examples of which we have in the patriarchs, and in the people of Israel when brought out of Egypt, and through the Red Sea and wilderness, and in the times of the judges, when they were distressed by their neighbors, and GOD sent them a deliverer time after time.

Psalm 22:5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. (KJV)

They cried unto thee, and were delivered . . . crying here is prayer to GOD, and sometime means mental prayer, sighing and groaning, which cannot be uttered, when no voice is heard, as with Moses (Ex.14:15; 17:4), but more often vocal prayer, raised in times of distress, and means in the intensity of trouble, and eagerness to be heard and relieved. This cry was from faith and followed by trusting in the LORD. Dear one, having first trusted: it is the prayer of faith that always brings results.
They trusted in thee, and were not confounded . . . were not ashamed of their trust in GOD,
For those who trust GOD shall never be confused.

Psalm 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. (KJV)

But I am a worm, and no man . . . CHRIST calls Himself a worm, because of His human nature, man being a worm, and the SON of Man (Job 25:6); and because of His low estate in His humiliation. Jacob is called a worm (Isa.41:14), not only because mean in his own eyes, but contemptible in the eyes of others. The Jews considered CHRIST as a worm, and treated Him as such. He was detestable to them and hated by them; they trampled on Him and trod Him under foot as men do worms (Heb.10:29). The best way to understand the logic of this Psalm is to read the history of our Saviour's suffering.
A reproach of men . . . CHRIST was criticized and rebuked by men, as if He were the worst of men; the reproaches of GOD and of His people all fell on Him, in that His Heart was broken (Ps.69:7).
And despised of the people . . . He was rejected with contempt as the MESSIAH, refused with scorn as the Corner Stone of Israel, disallowed of men, and set at naught by them (Mat.21:42; Mk.12:10; Lk.20:17; Acts 4:11). Despised of the people means the Jews, His own people hated Him so much that they condemned Him to die on the cross (Jn.1:11; 19:6, 15; Lk.23:21).

Psalm 22:7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, (KJV)

All they that see me laugh me to scorn . . . to those that are suffering, compassion and kindness should be shown; but instead of making any attempt to comfort Him in His sorrow, they laughed at Him; this was so of the soldiers when they had Him in Pilate's hall (Mat.27:27-31), and of the Jews in general when He hung upon the cross (Mat.27:41-43; Lk.23:35). There were only a few (Mat.7:14) special ones that sorrowed at His agony, John the beloved disciple, the mother of our LORD, Mary Magdalene, and some other women, who stood afar off beholding Him.
John 19:25-27 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.  26  When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!  27  Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. (KJV)
They shoot out the lip . . . or gaped at Him with their mouths open, they put out their lips, or, and in a way of sport and pastime made wide mouths and stuck out their tongues (Job 16:10).
They shake the head, saying . . .  in a way of contempt, ridicule and scorn (Lam.2:15). This was fulfilled by the Jews (Mat.27:39).

*****The unnamed disciple mentioned in John 19:25-27 is often called the disciple whom Jesus loved. He has traditionally been identified as John the son of Zebedee (Mat.4:21), one of the original twelve disciples, and the author of the Gospel of John. There are many who question this, but as far as I am concerned, I think it was the apostle John. But whoever he was, John’s Gospel says that he and several women, including JESUS' mother, were near the cross, close enough to talk to JESUS and hear His words.
The other three Gospels never mention a disciple whom Jesus loved. Neither do they say anything about any disciple or any women being near the cross, or talking with JESUS while He hung on the cross. Their accounts of the words that Jesus spoke from the cross are also completely different from the words credited to Him in John's Gospel.
All of this tells us that the author of the Gospel of John had information that was not available to the other Gospel writers. This information is usually thought to be the un-named beloved disciple himself, and a statement seems to confirm this: John 21:24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. (KJV)
John 13:23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. (KJV)
John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! (KJV)
John 20:2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. (KJV)
John 21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. (KJV)
John 21:20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? (KJV)

Psalm 22:8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him. (KJV)

He trusted on the LORD, that he would deliver him . . . is this a prophecy of our SAVIOUR’S sufferings, or is it really history? Matthew 27:43  He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. (KJV) . . . The confidence of CHRIST was very well grounded, yet these men jeered at Him. But He was delivered in the LORD'S own time and way from all His enemies, and out of all His troubles.
Let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him . . . this is another sarcastic spurn, not at GOD, but at CHRIST, and of His profession of trust in GOD, His claim of awareness in His favor, and of His relation to Him, as being His SON, in whom He was well pleased. CHRIST JESUS was ALWAYS was the delight of His FATHER. GOD expressed His being well pleased in Him at His baptism (Mat.3:17), and transfiguration on the mount (Mat.17:5). He took pleasure in Him while CHRIST was suffering and dying in the place of His people; and He delivered Him, raised Him from the dead, and brought Him into a large place, because He delighted in Him (Ps.18:19-20). These very words were said by the Jews about Christ, as he hung on the cross (Mat.27:43).

Psalm 22:9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts. (KJV)

But thou art he that took me out of the womb . . . GOD immediately and by Himself, without the help of any man, but by the miraculous operation of the HOLY GHOST, which had conceived Him there (Mat.1:20), or else JESUS could never have been brought forth. GOD had prepared the Man, JESUS (Jn.1:14), and had guided and defended Him from His earliest childhood.
Thou didst make me hope . . . GOD gave His SON more than enough reason for hope and trust.
GOD the Father watched over His SON, the Child JESUS, in His weak and helpless state, whom GOD so miraculously preserved and provided for in His childhood (Mat.2).
When I was upon my mother’s breasts . . .  when JESUS was still a sucking child, before He was weaned.

Psalm 22:10  I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly. (KJV)

I was cast upon thee from the womb . . . although oddly stated, the urging to trust was well founded on His previous experience of GOD’S help, this, too, is an argument for the divine interposition. CHRIST had been, so to say, thrown early in life upon the protecting care of GOD. In reality, He had been more unprotected and defenseless than is common at that young age, and He owed His preservation entirely to His FATHER. This, too, may have passed through the confused mind of our Redeemer on the cross. In those sad, suffering moments, He may have recalled portions of His early life: the poverty of His mother, the manger, the persecution by Herod, the flight into Egypt, the return, the safety which He then enjoyed from persecution in a distant part of the land of Palestine, in the obscure and unknown village of Nazareth. This too may have brought to His mind as a reason why GOD would intervene and deliver Him from the dreadful darkness which had come over Him now.
Thou art my God from my mother's belly . . . GOD had been His GOD from His early childhood. He had loved GOD as such; He had obeyed Him as such; He had trusted Him as such; and now He pleads this as a reason why GOD should intervene for Him.

Prayer for Deliverance (22:11-21)

In these verses we see CHRIST suffering and praying; by which we are directed to look at His cross, and to look up to GOD. The way of CHRIST'S death is described, although not used by the Jews. His Hands and His Feet were pierced, which were then nailed to that cursed tree, and His whole Body was left there to hang and to suffer the most severe pain and torture. This Sinless One (Isa.53:9; 2 Cor.5:21; Heb.4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet.2:22; 1 Jn.3:5), gave His life for us. Sin has a penalty that must be paid, and the Life of JESUS, the Sacrifice is the ransom for it. Our precious Lord JESUS was stripped, when He was crucified . . . that He might clothe us with the robe of His righteousness (Isa.61:10; 1 Cor.1:30). Let us all confirm our faith in Him as the One and Only True MESSIAH! Let us love Him who first loved us (1 Jn.4:19), love Him Who suffered the penalty of sin for us. CHRIST in His agony prayed, prayed intensely, prayed that the cup might pass from him (Mat.26:39, 42). We should seriously consider the sufferings CHRIST went through, and we should gratefully thank Him for what He did for us on that cross. Dear one, WE were there that day at the cross! JESUS paid my sin’s penalty, and yours too. Eternity has no yesterdays and no tomorrows. Eternity has only today. Think about it.

Psalm 22:11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. (KJV)

Be not far from me . . . GOD had been so near to Him, taking Him out of the womb, and taking care of Him ever since. This is to be understood of GOD’S Presence, which was now withdrawn from CHRIST, and which was filled with a sense of divine wrath, and with sorrow and distress; and also of His powerful and assisting Presence which He had promised, and CHRIST expected.
For trouble is near . . . the devil and his principalities and powers (Eph.6:12; Col.2:15) would attack CHRIST in the garden and on the cross. Judas, one of his own disciples, came to betray Him, and a multitude with swords and staves were about to seize Him (Mat.26:47). The sins and chastisement of His people were going to be laid upon Him; the hour of death was near, He was brought to the dust of it (Ps.22:15).
For there is none to help . . . none among His disciples helped, one of them would betray Him, another would deny Him, and all would forsake Him and flee from Him. None of the angels in Heaven helped Him, even though they ministered to Him in the wilderness (Mat.4:11), and strengthened Him in the garden (Lk.23:43), but there were none near Him on the cross, that it might be clear that salvation was wrought by Him alone (Isa.63:5). The angels would have been willing to have helped Him, but it was not in their power to do it, none but GOD could help; and so JESUS applies to Him, Who had promised and was as good as His Word (Isa.49:8).

Psalm 22:12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. (KJV)

Many bulls have compassed me . . . bull is a symbol of brutal strength, that gores and runs over all before it. Bulls here mean the chief priests, elders, Scribes, and Pharisees, among the Jews, and Herod and Pontius Pilate among the Gentiles, comparable to bulls for their fierceness, rage, and fury against CHRIST (Ps.2:1), and for their pushing at Him with their horns of power and authority, and for their treading Him, His Person and His offices under their feet. They surrounded Him at His apprehension, arraignment, trial and condemnation.
Strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round . . . Bashan was a very fruitful country, in which cattle of various sorts, and bulls among the rest, were fed and fattened (Deut.32:14). Bulls are great men, who abound in riches and power, and use them to oppress the poor, and are compared to the cattle of Bashan (Am.4:1), and is a very suitable name for the kings and princes of the Earth; for Caiaphas, Annas and the chief priests, that lived upon the fat of the land, who harassed CHRIST, and used all their power and strategy to take Him and bring Him to His death (Jn.19:6). Against CHRIST, the chiefs both of Jews and Gentiles were united.

Psalm 22:13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. (KJV)

They gaped upon me with their mouths . . . by way of derision and contempt (Job 16:10); or screaming violent blasphemy against Him, crying Crucify him, crucify him (Lk.23:21). In Psalm 22:7 they are represented as opening the mouth for another purpose . . . that of scorn; here they are described as if they were fierce and wild beasts ready to fall upon their prey.
As a ravening and roaring lion . . . when a lion has its prey, it rejoices (Am.3:4); and being in such hands, and surrounded with such enemies as CHRIST was in the garden, in the high priest's hall, and in Pilate's judgment hall, and is a third reason used by Him with GOD His FATHER, to be near to Him and not far from Him.

Psalm 22:14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. (KJV)

I am poured out like water . . . the images in this verse strongly describe a person in the deepest distress; whose courage, hope, strength and expectation of help and relief, had entirely failed.
Dear one, our Lord JESUS’ sufferings were extreme. He now turns from His enemies, and describes the effect of all these outward persecutions and trials on Himself. The meaning here is  that all His strength was gone.
And all my bones are out of joint . . . not through the stretching of His Body on the cross, which seems to be intended in Psalm 22:17; but as it is with persons in a panic, their joints seem to be loosed, and their bones parting asunder, their legs tremble, seeming as if every limb was dislocated and out of its place (Ps.6:2).
My heart is like wax, it is melted in the midst of my bowels . . . just as wax melts before the fire, so did the Heart of CHRIST at the fury and wrath of GOD, which was poured out like fire upon Him; and which He felt, when in the garden and on the cross, for bearing the sins of His people, and taking upon Himself the penalty that was due because of sins.

Psalm 22:15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. (KJV)

My strength is dried up like a potsherd . . . the essential moisture of His Body was dried up because of the loss of blood and sweat, and through the violent rush of His being hurried from court to court, which usually is present when persons are in a panic, in dread and fear of danger and death. This was caused by JESUS’ inward sorrow and distress of His Mind, which affected His Body and dried His bones, as a broken spirit is said to do (Pro.17:22). This was brought upon Him through the feeling that He had the wrath of GOD upon Him, which like fire dried up His strength, just as a potsherd burnt in a furnace. A potsherd is a piece of a broken pot, or a piece of earthenware (Isa.45:9; Job 2:8). The meaning here is that His strength was not strong like a green tree that was growing, and that was full of sap, but it was like a brittle piece of earthenware, so dry and fragile that it could be easily crumbled to pieces.
And my tongue cleaveth to my jaws . . . meaning that He could not even speak, sometimes it indicates silence (Job 29:10; Eze.3:26). Thus Christ answered not a word to the charges of the false witnesses before the high priest, nor to the accusations of the chief priests and elders before Pilate, nor did He open His Mouth when He was led to be crucified, neither against the law and justice of GOD, nor against His people for whom He suffered, nor against His enemies who treated Him cruelly (Mat.27:14; Mk.14:61; 15:3, 5; Lk.23:9); when He was reviled He reviled not again (1 Pet.2:23), but instead was thirsty, through the violent fever that was upon Him (Lam.4:4). So it was, when He hung on the cross, He said only, I thirst (Jn.19:28).
And thou hast brought me into the dust of death . . . meaning either death itself, which brings us to the dust, and which is indicated in this Psalm by going down to it (Ps.22:29), or the grave where the body crumbles into dust, and where it is covered with dust, and therefore is said to sleep in the dust of the earth (Dan.12:2). The meaning is, that JESUS was near death; or was just about to die.

Psalm 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. (KJV)

For dogs have compassed me . . . dogs mean wicked men, as the following clause shows. One version says: the wicked who are like to many dogs. The wicked are often compared to dogs in Scripture. Dogs, wicked people: (Pro.26:11-17; Isa.56:10-11; Mat.7:6; 15:26-27; Mk.7:27-28; Phil.3:2; 2 Pet.2:22; Rev.22:15). This may refer to the Roman soldiers, who were Gentiles, whom the Jews call dogs (Mat.15:26). These gathered together in Pilate's hall and surrounded CHRIST, and making sport of Him. It was to these soldiers who were to carry out the execution of Him . . . they crucified Him, and then sat around watching Him while on the cross, as they also did when He was in the grave. I also believe that the Jews are also meant, and as I see it, all of them, including the chiefs among them, the high priest, Sanhedrim, Scribes and Pharisees.
The assembly of the wicked have enclosed me . . . the Jewish Sanhedrim, the chief priests and elders, who assembled together to consult His death, before whom the Lord JESUS was brought when taken; and in the midst of whom He was set and examined, and by them unanimously condemned (Mat.27:22; Mk.15:12-15; Jn.19:6, 15; Acts 2:23). All their pretenses to religion was hypocritical, they were wicked men, as well as the whole congregation of the Jews . . . they all were united in their request for His crucifixion and death; and who then, in great numbers got together, and stood around Him when He hung in agony on the cross, mocking Him.
They pierced my hands and my feet . . . the soldiers drove huge nails into JESUS’ Hands and Feet when they nailed Him to the cross. Dear one, think about how big those nails had to be, to keep Him secured to that tree! I do not know how large these nails were, but I can guess, and I would say maybe up to 10 or 12 inches long. What agony our Redeemer suffered for the likes of us vile sinners! Have you ever really considered just what this awesome Man went through for you? PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT.

Psalm 22:17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. (KJV)

I may tell all my bones . . . some versions render it, they have numbered all my bones. The Targum is, I will number all the scars of my members, made by the blows, scourges, and wounds he received.  This may refer to the violent extension of His Body when the whole of its weight hung on the nails driven into His Hands to the crosswise beam of the cross. His Body being so stretched, the main bones stood out and were easily seen.
They look and stare upon me . . . some say this means His Bones did not stare, but His enemies stared . . . which could be understood by way of contempt, as many Jewish interpreters explain it: so the Scribes and elders of the people, and the people themselves, looked and stared at Him on the cross, mocking and insulting Him; or by way of rejoicing, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen (Ps.35:21), that is to say, what they desired and wished for. The sight of JESUS on the cross should have been enough to move a heart of stone, but it made no impression on them. They had no pity on Him, no compassion on Him, but instead rejoiced at His misery. This staring agrees with their character as dogs. They look and stare upon me . . . to me, this refers to His Bones, as if they stood out and stared at Him. Any time I think of this verse, only one thing comes to mind, that being that before the Romans crucified anyone they flogged JESUS in a most horrible way. Isaiah 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: (KJV) . . . The flogging was so severe, that it ripped His flesh wide open to reveal His Bones!

Psalm 22:18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. (KJV)

They part my garments among them . . . this happened at the crucifixion of our LORD. The soldiers divided His upper garment into four parts, each soldier taking a part.
And cast lots on my vesture . . . His tunic or inward vestment was without seam, woven in one entire piece, and they agreed not to divide, but they cast lots for it. Of this prophecy in Scripture the Roman soldiers knew nothing; yet they fulfilled it to the letter. This was foreseen by the SPIRIT of GOD; and this is a direct revelation concerning JESUS CHRIST. All this was exactly fulfilled in CHRIST (Jn.19:23).

Psalm 22:19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me. (KJV)

But be not thou far from me, O Lord . . . (22:11).
O my strength . . . CHRIST as GOD is the mighty GOD, the Almighty and as Mediator, He is the strength of His people; but with JESUS as Man, GOD His FATHER was His strength; and He is the Man at GOD’S right Hand, whom He has made strong for Himself, and whom He has promised His arm shall strengthen (Ps.80:17); and therefore He speaks to Him in this manner, saying,
Haste thee to help me . . . JESUS’ help was in GOD and His strength alone; there were none that could help Him but GOD, but He seemed to be so far off from Him (22:1); and with Him feeling so distressed, as is represented in the preceding verses, He wanted help fast.

Psalm 22:20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. (KJV)

Deliver my soul from the sword . . . from the rage and violence of My enemies, as the sword is often taken in Scripture (Jer.25:16, 27, 29; Eze.38:21). Wicked men have tongues like a sharp sword, reproaching and blaspheming Him, and bearing false witness against Him; and crying out, Crucify him, crucify him (Lk.23:21; Ps.17:12). Wicked men’s tongues are instruments of violence, just as the iron bar with which the legs of the malefactors crucified with Him were broken (Jn.19:31-33), which He escaped; and the spear which pierced His side (Jn.19:34), after He had commended His Soul or SPIRIT into the Hands of His Father; or a violent death; for His death had the appearance of violence, He was taken in a violent manner, and condemned to be put to death, and was crucified, yet his life was not taken away by men; He laid it down, and gave it up Himself.
My darling from the power of the dog . . . My darling means one alone, only, as an only child,  or one alone, as forsaken, lonely, worthless (Ps.25:16; 68:6). According to some, it is used as being something most dear, or as meaning most precious (Job 2:4). This would correspond with the expression in the first part of the verse, deliver my soul.

Psalm 22:21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. (KJV)

Save me from the lion's mouth . . .  His enemies are represented as fierce and ravening lions (22:13). The devil is as a roaring lion (1 Pet.5:8), whom CHRIST overcame both in the garden and on the cross, and destroyed him and all his wicked enemies, especially the most powerful of them, who were in great authority, such as the chief priests and elders. So too, are rulers and civil magistrates, who are cruel and unmerciful, are compared to lions (Pro.28:15).
For thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns . . . the word heard in this place is equal to saved, or saved in answer to prayer. The fact of hearing the prayer, and answering it, is regarded as so alike, that they may be spoken of as the same thing (Heb.5:7). From the horns of the unicorns . . . it is common for Old Testament writers to call their enemies by the names of the fiercest creatures. This mentioned here, whether the unicorn, or rhinoceros, or some other wild beast, the unicorn is a supposed strong, fierce and untamable wild beast (Deut.33:17; Job 39:9-10; Ps.92:10). CHRIST'S strong and potent enemies are here intended; such as Satan and his principalities and powers, the Jewish Sanhedrim, Herod, Pontius Pilate, and others, from whose power He was freed when raised from the dead.

*****Psalms 22 is a most graphic picture of death by crucifixion. The bones (of the hands, arms, shoulders, and pelvis) out of joint (22:14) the profuse perspiration caused by intense suffering (22:14); the action of the heart affected (22:14); strength is gone, and there is extreme thirst (22:15); the hands and are feet pierced (22:16) with near nudity, wounds modesty (22:17), are all incidental to that way of death. All these circumstances are precisely those fulfilled in the crucifixion of CHRIST.

Praises for Mercies and Redemption (22:22-31)

The SAVIOUR now speaks as risen from the dead. The first words of the complaint were used by CHRIST Himself when on the cross (Mat.27:46; Mk.15:34); the first words of the triumph are specifically applied to Him (Heb.2:12). All our praises must refer to His work of redemption. The suffering of the REDEEMER was graciously accepted as a full satisfaction for sin by the Lord GOD! Although His Sacrifice was offered for sinful men (all of us), the FATHER did not scorn or hate it for our sakes. This should be the matter of our thanksgiving. All humble, gracious souls should have a full satisfaction and happiness in CHRIST JESUS! Those that hunger and thirst after the righteousness in CHRIST (1 Cor.1:30; 2 Cor.5:21; Phil.3:9; 2 Pet.1:1), shall not labor for that which satisfies not. Those that pray much, should be much in thanksgiving. Let every tongue confess that JESUS is LORD. High and low, rich and poor, bond and free, must meet in CHRIST or it is all in vain . . . for there is NO way we can keep our own souls from the lake of fire (Rev.20:15). Only JESUS can do that (Jn.14:6; Acts 4:120. If we are wise, we will by obedient faith, commit our souls to CHRIST, who is well able to save and keep them safe forever.
Redemption by CHRIST is GOD the FATHER’S One and Only Plan. It is only in this Plan that we see the free love and compassion of GOD the FATHER, and of our Lord JESUS CHRIST, for us vile and wretched sinners. We see the source of all grace and comfort; we see the Example we are to follow, and we see how we are to behave. Every lesson we learn can profit the humbled soul. Let us thank our SAVIOUR, for He has honored His FATHER’S will and gave His Life as a once for all Sacrifice for the penalty of our sins (Heb.10:10). May all those who are careless take warning, and flee from the wrath to come (Rev.6:17; 11:18; 20:15), and the trembling rest their hopes in this Merciful REDEEMER. Judgment Day is coming! http://www.judgmentcoming.org/j_c_judgment_day_IS_coming.htm

Psalm 22:22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. (KJV)

I will declare thy name unto my brethren . . . Thy name is the power, faithfulness, goodness and perfections which CHRIST hast manifested on our behalf. This verse begins the second part of Psalm 22, which states the fruit of CHRIST’S passion and resurrection, Who is not ashamed here to call us brethren; but links the Kingdom to us as coheirs with Himself. Nothing is more common in the Psalms, than these sudden changes, and nothing more beautiful. JESUS here passes from the mournful view of His death to the magnificent prospect of His Resurrection. He states that after GOD delivers Him from the power of death by a glorious resurrection, He would more fully broadcast His Gospel, which reveal the gratifying perfections of GOD, especially His wisdom and mercy. These would be more highly displayed among His apostles, and the rest of His disciples and followers, whom He is not ashamed to call His brethren (Heb.2:11-12). The following verses are literally true of CHRIST, and His glorious reign in the latter days when all the people upon Earth, even in the most remote corners of the world, shall worship and adore Him.
In the midst of the congregation will I praise thee . . . this does not mean with the Jews, or in their synagogue or Temple, where He often attended public worship, and preached and praised the LORD; but instead with the company of His disciples, among whom He sung a hymn the night He was betrayed (Mat.26:30; Mk.14:26), and with whom He spoke for forty days after His Resurrection (Acts 1:3).

Psalm 22:23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. (KJV)

Ye that fear the LORD, praise him . . . ye that fear the LORD means those who are sincere in their love for GOD. Praise him         is an appeal and warning to all, to profit from the preaching of the Gospel. Possibly, by them that fear Him, the Gentiles, and especially the proselytes, may be intended. The Jews are mentioned by name.
All ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him . . . the descendants of Jacob, meaning all who are TRUE worshippers of GOD. CHRIST has a perfect right to expect us to honor, glorify and praise Him.
And fear him, all ye the seed of Israel . . . the seed of Jacob, the seed of Israel  . . . two names of the same person; and do not mean Israel according to the flesh, but according to the SPIRIT. The entire Israel of GOD, means all the spiritual seed of Israel (Gal.3:26-29), who are justified in CHRIST (Rom.5:1), and are saved by His precious Blood (1 Pet.1:18-19). They are the same as them that fear the LORD, and are here encouraged to fear Him and Him alone, and not men (Mat.10:28), even though they are so mighty and powerful (2:12). The power and wisdom of GOD is greater than all the might of all His enemies put together! Trust GOD. Have faith in HIM and He will see you through! If you lack faith, pray that GOD increase it (Lk.17:5).

Psalm 22:24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. (KJV)

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted . . . He hath not despised, CHRIST was despised by the people (22:6), but not by GOD. CHRIST was afflicted by men, by their tongues and their hands; by the temptations of Satan, for though CHRIST was tempted, He did not give in to his attacks upon Him, both in the garden and on the cross. The Lord JESUS was also tempted by GOD His FATHER, who laid on Him the iniquity and chastisement of His people . . . He bruised JESUS, putting Him to much grief; brought the sword of justice against Him, and did not spare Him. This is mentioned as a reason for praise and thanksgiving in them that fear the LORD; since GOD considered the redemption price His SON has paid for them sufficient. GOD has not despised the Sacrifice, but fully accepted of it as the ransom of their souls. CHRIST paid the penalty of our sin ONCE: (Rom.6:10; Heb.7:27; 9:12, 26, 28; 10:10; 1 Pet.3:18). See my comment at the end of this verse.
Neither hath he hid his face from him . . . when men hid their faces from Him, as ashamed of Him (Isa.53:3); His FATHER, for a while, and in wrath, did hide His Face from JESUS, so that He might bear the whole curse of the law for us (Gal.3:10, 13) . . . BUT He did return to JESUS, and has never hid His Face from Him since, and never shall ever again!
But when he cried unto him, he heard . . . cried not only because of His crucifiers, that GOD would forgive them; but because of Himself, that He would not be afar off from Him; that He would take His SPIRIT or Soul into His Hands, into which He committed it (Lk.23:46); that He would deliver Him from the power of death and the grave, and loose their bands; in all which He was heard (Heb.5:7).

*****Catholic tradition: The mass. Through transubstantiation, the wafer/host and the wine supposedly become the actual blood and body of Jesus Christ when the priest prays over them. Ridiculous! That would make Catholics cannibals!
What the Bible says: Hebrews 10:12 But this man [Jesus], after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; [13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. [14] For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. [15] Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, [16] This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; [17] And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. [18] Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. (KJV) Jesus died ONCE for sins, NEVER to be repeated. He sits on the right Hand of God and ABSOLUTELY does NOT reappear in the mass as a mass of blood and flesh. http://judgmentcoming.org/j_c_cults_catholic.htm

Psalm 22:25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him. (KJV)

My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation . . . the great congregation is either in the general assemblies of the Israelites at their solemn feasts; or in the universal church, made up of Jews and Gentiles in the latter days. The members praise shall the Name of the LORD; and this will bring great multitudes who shall be converted, because the voice of praise and thanksgiving will be among them (Rev.7:9).
I will pay my vows before them that fear him . . . My vows are those praises and services which in the LORD’S distress, He vowed to return to His Father when He delivered JESUS.

Psalm 22:26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. (KJV)

The meek shall eat and be satisfied . . . the meek are faithful or godly persons, who are often called meek ones (Ps.25:9; 76:9; 149:4; Isa.11:4; 61:1; Zep.2:3), because the grace of GOD does soften and sweeten the hearts of sinners, subduing their pride, passion and rebellion against GOD, and their violence towards men.
They shall praise the LORD that seek him. . . those that seek Him; those that seek His favor or ask of Him, and really try to know and understand Him. When CHRIST shall appear in the flesh, and in the form of a servant (Phil:2:7) which was very likely to hide Him from the eyes of the carnal and careless Jews, and not to be recognized, only by those that were serious concerning the Word of GOD revealed in the Scriptures concerning this matter.
Your heart shall live for ever . . . this is a statement of CHRIST to them that fear the LORD, the seed of Jacob and Israel; the meek ones, the ones that seek the LORD, His face and His favor, and who eat and are satisfied . . . indicating, that they would be revived and refreshed, would be joyful and comfortable; would live by faith in CHRIST now, and have eternal life in them now (Jn.5:24; 6:47, 54), and would live with CHRIST forever, and never die the second death (Rev.2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8).
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV) . . . Hath = has! If you hear JESUS’ Word and believe on GOD who sent His Son, you HAVE eternal life! And NO one can take it away from you!

Psalm 22:27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. (KJV)

All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD . . . all parts of the Earth, all nations. The Earth is often represented in the Scriptures as having limits or boundaries; as spread out; as having corners (Jer. 9:26; 25:23; 49:32; Eze.7:2; Rev. 7:1). This language is in accordance with the prevailing ways of thinking, in the same way as we say, the sun rises; the sun sets, etc. Shall remember . . . the nations are often represented as forgetting GOD; they seem as if they had known Him once, but had forgotten Him (Job 8:13; Ps.9:17; 44:17, 20; 50:22; 106:13). Here it is said that they would again call GOD to their memory, meaning that they would worship Him as the true GOD.
And turn unto the LORD . . . turn away from their idols, and to worship of the true, living GOD.
And all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee . . . not only externally, by praying before the LORD, and attending His Word and ordinances; but internally, in spirit and in truth (Jn.4:24), which worshippers the LORD seeks. Such spiritual worshippers are believers in Him, and this must be understood of people of all nations, kindred and tongues, whom CHRIST has redeemed by His Blood, and calls by His grace (Zec.14:16). Shall worship before thee . . . shall worship in His Presence; shall worship Him. The language comes from the act of worshipping GOD in the Tabernacle or the Temple, before the evident symbol of His Presence there.

Psalm 22:28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. (KJV)

For the kingdom is the LORD'S . . . the kingdom belongs to the true GOD (Ps.47:7-8; Mat.6:13).
And he is the governor among the nations . . . He shall rule in the hearts of some by His SPIRIT and grace, and over others with a rod of iron (Ps.2:9). He is the rightful Governor or Ruler over the nations. This is a statement of the absolute right of GOD to reign over all the nations of the Earth, and it expresses an assurance on the part of the MESSIAH that, as the result of His work, the Kingdom of GOD over the nations would be actually established (Dan.7:13-14, 27; 1 Cor. 15:24-28).

Psalm 22:29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. (KJV)

All they that be fat upon earth . . . all, many of them, as the word all is often used (Ps.72:11; Mat.3:5; 17:11; Lk.6:26; Jn.3:26; 2 Tim.3:9). They that be fat upon earth . . . kings and princes, and the great men of the world, who are often described by this symbol (Job 15:27; Ps.17:10; 73:7; 78:31; Isa.10:16), whose conversion to Christ is also foretold in other places (Ps.45:12; 72:10-11; Isa.60:3, 5, 10; 1 Tim.2:1-2; Rev.21:24). These that be fat are opposed to the poor and miserable part of the world, of whom He speaks in the next words, and also (22:26). So the sense is, that both poor and rich should embrace the Gospel.
Shall eat, and worship . . . in the first times of the Gospel, not many mighty and noble were called, yet some were; but more specially, in the latter days, many of these will be called, even kings and queens; who will not live on their titles of honor, their grandeur and glory, but on CHRIST and His Gospel, and will fall down before Him, and serve and worship Him (Ps.45:12; 68:29; 72:10). Even so, come Lord JESUS, come! (Rev.22:20).
All they that go down to the dust shall bow before him . . . those who are crushed, broken and oppressed; the poor, the sad, the sorrowful. Salvation is for them, just as it is for the rich and the great. Shall bow before him . . . shall worship before the one and only true GOD.
And none can keep alive his own soul . . . NO one can quicken himself when dead in trespasses and sins; only belief and faith in CHRIST can give us eternal life in Heaven with Him one day.
So too, NO one can preserve his life, nourish himself, make himself lively and comfortable, nor cause his heart to live and have hope (22:26) . . . except by eating the flesh, and drinking the blood of CHRIST (Jn.6:53-58), feeding and living upon Him by FAITH. See our commentary on the Book of John to clarify this. http://www.godcannotlie.org/john_commentary_ch6.html

Psalm 22:30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the LORD for a generation. (KJV)

A seed shall serve him . . . a seed, a people; a race. The meaning here is, that, as the result of the work performed by the Sufferer, many would be brought to serve GOD . . . meaning that CHRIST shall always have a seed to serve Him in every age; a remnant according to the election of grace (Rom.9:29); so that as the former verses speak of the size of CHRIST'S Kingdom, through the calling of the Gentiles, these and the following words express the length of it.
Shall be accounted to the LORD for a generation . . . of His people, His children whom He accounts and esteems as such; or a seed shall be considered by the LORD, as belonging to Him, in every generation throughout all ages, to the end of time. There will always be a generation of His people and friends (Ps.68:31; 72:8-11; 87:4-6).

*****This believing seed shall be reputed, both by GOD and men, the generation, or children or people of the LORD were formerly the Jews . . . but because of the Jews’ contempt and rejection of CHRIST and His Gospel, the Gentiles came in their stead, and enjoy the privileges.

Psalm 22:31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this. (KJV)

They shall come . . . They, either the converts and worshippers (22:27, 29), or their seed just mentioned (22:30). Shall come from Judea and Jerusalem, from where the Gospel was first to go forth to the Gentile world, to the several parts where the apostles went bringing the Word of GOD. One generation after another; there will always be a succession of believers, who shall come to CHRIST, and to His churches; and a succession of Gospel ministers among them, who shall come forth, being sent and qualified by CHRIST.
And shall declare his righteousness . . . GOD'S righteousness is either, (1). His wonderful grace and mercy to mankind, in giving them CHRIST and the Gospel . . . for righteousness is often put for mercy or kindness. Or (2). That righteousness which GOD has appointed for the justification of sinners, called the righteousness of faith (Rom.3:21-22; Phil.3:9), of which the Jews were ignorant and would not submit to (Rom.10:3), but which the Gentiles joyfully embraced. Or (3). His truth or faithfulness, which is very often and rightly called righteousness in the performance of those exceeding great and precious promises (2 Pet.1:4) made and recorded in the Old Testament, and especially those concerning the sending of the MESSIAH, and concerning the calling of the Gentiles (Isa.60:3; 62:2; Dan.7:14; Mic.4:2; Mal.1:11).
Unto a people that shall be born . . . those born in successive generations, for to these only, in a spiritual and saving way, is the righteousness of CHRIST declared, revealed, and applied by the HOLY SPIRIT through the ministry of the Gospel.
That he hath done this . . . CHRIST worked out this righteousness; became the end of the law for it; has fulfilled it (Mat.5:17), all the great things spoken of in this Psalm, relating to the MESSIAH, His sufferings, death, and resurrection, and the calling of the Gentiles; all which are the LORD'S doings, and are what is declared in the Gospel.

*****The Gospel of CHRIST, pure and in its entirety, to all believers, and even to a people that are not even born yet, declare two things:
(1). There is an everlasting righteousness, which CHRIST JESUS has brought in. It is this righteousness of JESUS, and not anything of our own, that is the foundation of all our hopes and the fountain of all our joys (Rom.16:17).
(2). The work of our redemption by CHRIST is the LORD'S own doing (Ps.118:23), and no work whatsoever of ours. There is only ONE work the LORD desires of us: John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. (KJV)
We must declare to our children what GOD has done for us. Dear one, His wisdom is a mystery, and in this mystery, His mighty Arm is revealed. Let us triumph in the awesome Name of CHRIST as above every name, and we must give Him honor and praise for what He has done for us.

Special Comments

Some say that the only way JESUS could pay the penalty for our sins is to spend eternity in Hell. That is not true. JESUS paid the eternal penalty of sins for all who would believe through His one-time, once for all Sacrifice on the cross for sin.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: (KJV)
Because JESUS is GOD Incarnate, He could pay the eternal penalty of human sin in ONE ultimate Sacrifice.

1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (KJV) . . .  Peter refers to JESUS as the Suffering Servant of Isaiah Chapter 53.
http://www.godcannotlie.org/book_of_isaiah_suffering_servant_intro.htm

JESUS bore our sins in His Body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds we have been healed. The once for all Sacrifice and wounds of CHRIST on the cross sufficiently paid for our sins, that He can offer us justification, IF we believe GOD (1 Jn.5:10-13), and accept His work on the cross by faith (Rom.5:1).

Besides paying the ultimate price of death on the cross, JESUS was also the ultimate Being to be sacrificed. He was without spot of blemish (1 Pet.1:19; 2:22-24; 3:18; Dan.9:24). In other words, Perfect GOD in Human form was the Perfect Sacrifice. As a result, payment in full has been made on behalf of human sin . . . IF we simply believe this and accept it! All that a person has to do reach out and accept the GIFT of salvation GOD has so graciously provided for us.
John 1:12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (KJV)
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (KJV)
1 John 5:10-13 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. (KJV)

Before the death of JESUS, Jewish priests were required to repeatedly offer sacrifices on behalf of the sins of the people. But when CHRIST JESUS had offered a single Perfect Sacrifice for sins, for all time, He sat down at the right Hand of GOD. Hebrews 10:11-12 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: 12  But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; (KJV)
NO more sacrifices are needed! No longer were repeated sacrifices necessary; CHRIST'S Sacrifice was and is sufficient for all time. Hebrews 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. (KJV)

The perfect GOD-MAN, JESUS CHRIST, paid the perfect, sufficient payment for sin. Because JESUS is GOD, He could make a one-time payment to cover our endless offenses. Rather than living eternally in Hell to pay for our sins, JESUS could offer Himself as a one-time, Perfect Sacrifice, which GOD the FATHER accepted on our behalf ,. . . IF we do NOT reject Him.
Those who believe in Him receive salvation and forgiveness of sins, and abundant life now.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)  . . . Hath = HAVE it now!
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (KJV)
John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV)
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)
Dear one, there is ONLY ONE WAY to get to Heaven and that is JESUS!
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (KJV)
Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV)
JESUS is the ONLY ONE Who can save you from Hell!

The Six Miracles of Calvary

The Miraculous Darkness: Luke 23:44-45. It was the 6th hour. That was noon. There was darkness over all the land and it continued from 12:00 to 3:00 o'clock. This was not an eclipse, which lasts for only a few minutes. It was at full moon, when an eclipse is impossible. At Jesus birth the night became light. At His death the light became night.

The Rending of the Veil: Matthew 27:51. There were three divisions in the Temple: #1. The Outer Court, #2. The Holy Place and #3. the Most Holy Place. There was a very high and stout veil that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. The Most Holy Place is where only the High Priest entered, and ONLY once a year. NO one else ever stepped beyond this veil. When JESUS cried out on the cross . . . "It Is Finished", this veil was torn in two from top to bottom, thus opening the way for anyone to enter into the Presence of GOD, without the high priest.

The Miraculous Earthquake: Matthew 27:51. The shaking of the Earth was at the exact moment of JESUS’ death. The Earth quaked to the extent that rocks were split open, yet the cross did NOT move. Supernatural? Yes! GOD interfered with nature.

The Miracle of the Opened Graves. Matthew 27:52-53. The graves, of some saints, were opened at the very moment of Jesus’ death. Graves were rocky tombs, excavations in the rocks, and made secure by doors of stone. None came out of the graves at this time. The Earthquake was evidence of GOD’S divine power. The opening of the graves was evidence of GOD’S will.

The Undisturbed Grave Clothes of JESUS. Luke 24:12; John 20:3-10. When Peter and John entered the sepulcher, they saw the "linen clothes lying"...precisely as the Body had lain there. No human hands could have removed the Body from its clothes without leaving behind marks of disturbance. One thing they knew, JESUS was not there. He had risen.

Life in the Graveyard. Matthew 27:52-53. The graves of the saints were opened at the earthquake, but the dead bodies of the saints, did not rise and come out of the graves, until after CHRIST JESUS Himself had risen. This is a magnificent miracle to say the least! Absolutely miraculous.

The last words of JESUS before His Death

(1). Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. (Luke 24:34).
Even while experiencing the horrible pain of crucifixion, He was praying for the very people who caused His suffering. He came to earth for the purpose of forgiving sinners and He loved them and forgave them up until the end. It was because of man’s sin that He was on the cross—suffering on behalf of that sin.

(2). Today you will be with me in Paradise. (Luke 23:43).
Not only did JESUS forgive those who crucified Him, He also forgave one of the thieves crucified next to Him. When the thieves were put on the cross both of them cursed JESUS but, as time elapsed, one of the thieves had a change of heart.

(3). Woman, behold your Son. (John 19:26).
As JESUS continued to suffer on the cross His mind was still upon others. He saw His mother standing near the apostle John and said, Woman, behold your son. He then looked at John and said, Behold your mother! By doing this He was entrusting the care of His mother to John. The law required the firstborn son to take care of his parents, and JESUS was obeying the law of GOD up until the end.

(4). My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mat.27:46).
The fourth saying of JESUS from the cross is probably the most difficult for us to understand. The sinless SON of GOD who had been, from all eternity, in an intimate relationship with His FATHER, is now spiritually separated from Him. When the sins of the world were put upon JESUS, there was, for the first time, a separation between the FATHER and the SON. The Bible records something happened between them that we can only understand through the eye of faith. For he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him (2 Cor.5:21). In order for this to happen, the FATHER had to forsake the SON and punish Him on our behalf.

(5). I thirst. (John 19:28).
The fifth statement that JESUS made from the cross reminds us again that He suffered as a human being. He lived as a man and suffered as a man in order that He could identify with suffering humanity. From this statement we observe that JESUS suffered the full physical effect of crucifixion. There was no easing up, for the weight of our sins was placed upon Him.

(6). It is finished. (John 19:30).
The sixth statement from JESUS while on the cross was a cry of victory. He finished the job that the FATHER gave Him to do. He fulfilled prophecy. He achieved victory over Satan, sin, and death, and He secured salvation for all that would believe.

(7). Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. (Luke 23:46).
This is the final statement that we have from JESUS before His death. Everything had been completed and now it was time to dismiss His Spirit. JESUS had previously made the statement that He would willingly lay down His life for His sheep. Therefore my Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from my Father (John 10:17-18). From this we realize that JESUS had to purposely dismiss His SPIRIT; it could not be taken from Him. Unless He desired to die, He would not have had to. Because He was a willing victim, however, He chose to die. Upon making His final statement, Jesus died.

Psalm 22 Prophecies Fulfilled in New Testament

#1. (KJV)  Mark 15:33-34And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34  And at the ninth hour JESUS cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? (KJV)  Luke 23:44-45 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45  And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. (KJV)

#2. (KJV)

#3. (KJV)

#4. (KJV)

#5. (KJV)

#6. (KJV)

#7. (KJV)

#8. (KJV)

(KJV)

#10. (KJV)

#11. (KJV)

#12. He committed Himself to GOD. Psalm 22:20-21Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog. 21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. #13. Satanic power bruising the Redeemer's heel.  Psalm 22:20-21 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

#14. (KJV)

#15. (KJV)
