Types of Christ in the Old Testament

David as a Type of Christ

David is another example of a type of Christ. He was a shepherd, carefully leading his flock and protecting them from death. 1 Samuel 17:34-35 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: [35] And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. (KJV) . . . Christ is our Shepherd.

John 10:2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (KJV)
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. (KJV)
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. (KJV)
Hebrews 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, (KJV)
1 Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. (KJV)
1 Peter 5:4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. (KJV)
Christ protects us from the ever present dangers of our enemy, Satan, and He also protects us from the eternal dangers of an everlasting Hell by writing our names in the book of life (Rev.20:15).

David was also a hero, going up against insurmountable odds when he went up against Goliath. 1 Samuel 17:31-33 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him. [32] And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. [33] And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. (KJV) 1 Samuel 17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. [37] David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. (KJV) . . . Tremendous FAITH!
1 Samuel 17:48-50 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. [49] And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. [50] So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. (KJV) . . . Christ prevails over the giant, Satan!

David had to endure the wilderness and many trials before he finally became king. 1 Samuel 16:12-13 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. [13] Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. (KJV) . . . Christ endured the wilderness (Mat.4:1-17) and many horrific trials (Mat.26:36-42; 27:26-31; John 19:1; 8:59; 10:31). He as yet is not King, but that day is very near!

Christ Jesus is our Shepherd, leading us to salvation and protecting us from death. He was hero to a multitude while He was on Earth, and He IS King NOW to TRUE believers!

There are many types of Christ all through the Old Testament. When we study them, we clearly see that God has made available consistent messages to us for thousands of years. the sadness is that most people could care less. God's consistency all through the ages is what makes the Bible such a powerful record and testimony to Christians. Through the many authors, the messages stay true and clear. Christ Jesus is Lord and only Saviour. BELIEVE it my friend!
