Types of Christ in the Old Testament

Adam as a Type of Christ

Adam is the father of all men according to the flesh; Jesus Christ is the spiritual Father of the faithful, for through Him alone do they receive life. Through Adam, sin and death came to all men; through Jesus Christ, we have received grace and eternal life. Sin and misery came into the world by Adam’s disobedience; but our redemption has been wrought by Jesus Christ, who became obedient even unto the death of the Cross.

Romans 5:12-21 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: [13] (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. [14] Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. [15] But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. [16] And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. [17] For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) [18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. [19] For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. [20] Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: [21] That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV)

1 Corinthians 15:45-49 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. [46] Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. [47] The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. [48] As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. [49] And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. (KJV)

Seven Contrasts between Adam and Christ:

1. First Adam . . . Last Adam: The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
2. Living soul. . . quickening spirit.
3. Natural . . . spiritual. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
4. Earthly . . . heavenly. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
5. Of Earth . . . of Heaven.
6. Only man . . . both Man and God.
7. First man . . . Second man.

1. Adam was head of the old creation. Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (KJV)
Christ is head of the new creation. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. [18] And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; (KJV) Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (KJV)

2. Adam sinned (Gen.2:17; 3:6; Rom.5:12-21)
Christ did not sin. Isaiah 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. (KJV) Hebrews 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; (KJV) 1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: (KJV)

3. Adam by one act of disobedience made many sinners. Romans 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (KJV)
Christ by the act of obedience made many righteous. Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (KJV) Hebrews 10:10-14 (KJV) By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [11] And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: [12] But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; [13] From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. [14] For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 1 Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. (KJV)

4. Adam was made a living soul. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (KJV)
Christ was made a quickening Spirit. 1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. (KJV)

5. Adam was of the earth. Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (KJV)
Christ was the Lord from heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. (KJV)

6. Adam brought death. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (KJV) Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) (KJV) 1 Corinthians 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. (KJV)
Christ brings life. Romans 5:17-18 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) [18] Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (KJV) John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV) 1 Corinthians 15:21-22 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. [22] For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. (KJV)

7. Adam passed a sinful nature to his offspring. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (KJV) Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (KJV) Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. (KJV) Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. (KJV)
Christ imparts a sinless nature. Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. (KJV) 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. [18] And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; (KJV) 2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (KJV)

8. Adam brought condemnation. Romans 5:16-18 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. (KJV)
Christ brings justification. Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (KJV) Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (KJV) Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (KJV) Romans 4:25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. (KJV)

9. Adam lost the grace or favor of God. Romans 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (KJV) Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (KJV) . . . Also see: Genesis 3:6-24.);
Christ restored grace to people. Romans 5:15-17 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. [17] For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) (KJV) Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: (KJV) John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. (KJV)

10. Adam offended God. Romans 5:15-18 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. (KJV) Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. (KJV) . . . Also see: Gen.3:17-24.
Christ pleased God. Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (KJV) Matthew 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (KJV) (Also: Luke 9:35-36; John 12:28-30) 2 Peter 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (KJV)

11. Death reigned through Adam. Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (KJV) Romans 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. (KJV) Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) (KJV)
Life reigns through Christ. (KJV) Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. (KJV) John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. [16] For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV) John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (KJV)

12. Adam caused sin to abound. Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: (KJV)
Christ causes grace to abound. Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: (KJV)

The free gift FAR exceeds the consequences of sin.

Romans 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. (KJV) Romans 5:17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) (KJV) Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: (KJV)

Through Adam's sin, a sentence of death unto ALL mankind . . . this condemnation is WITHOUT a promise of resurrection unto eternal life in Heaven. It is ONLY by the obedience of Christ taking man's place, that the sentence is completely cancelled . . . IF and WHEN we believe God (1 John 5:10-13) and accept Christ's Work on the cross (John 3:15-18,36; 5:24; 8:24). ANYONE who rejects God's ONLY Plan of salvation (John 14:6; Acts 4:12), IS under the sentence of death . . . an eternal death in the Lake of Fire (Rev.20:15; Mat.25:46).

A person is INCLUDED as a sinner through Adam, under the sentence of death . . . UNTIL they are EXCLUDED from the sentence of death through the righteousness of Christ (1 Cor.1:30). NO personal acts of righteousness, NO works of ANY kind can or will dismiss anyone from the sentence of death brought on mankind by Adam. Just Jesus can do that! He died for us! Believe it!

The obedience unto death. Philippians 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (KJV)
