ISRAEL'S GOSPEL absolutely IS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

When talking to Jewish people about Jesus, the New Testament is not acknowledged or recognized as an authority in their life today. So, the Gospel is best, by far, shown to them from the Old Testament.
When witnessing to someone who is not Jewish you can easily present the Gospel from the New Testament, laying out the claims of Jesus as Messiah, showing how man is sinful and separated from God, and discussing reconciliation and redemption. But you should not do this when talking to Jewish people about Jesus. The New Testament is not acknowledged or recognized as an authority in Jewish life today. So, the Gospel is best presented from the Old Testament.

Below is a group of Old Testament Scriptures, which, when linked together, help to clearly present the Gospel to Jews. This can be applied not only for Jewish evangelism or witnessing, but to any spiritual principle found throughout the Scriptures. The Gospel is CLEARLY in the Old Testament!
Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. (KJV)
The problem is NEVER with God, the problem is with OUR iniquities. Sin always separates us from God. HOW does sin separate us from God? Sin does not necessarily separate us from the Presence of God, because God is present everywhere (Ps.139:7), and even Satan can meet with God (Job 1:6). Sin does not separate us from the love of God, because God loves sinners (Rom.5:8). But sin DOES separate us from God:

  • Sin separates us from fellowship with God . . . when we sin, we disobey God.
  • Sin separates us from being blessed by God . . . when we sin, we are not trusting God.
  • Sin separates us from God's love . . . when we sin, we cannot enjoy God's love until we repent.
  • Sin separates us from God's protection . . . because He will allow, and even bring trials our way to correct us.

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. . . this means that God has hidden or withdrawn His Presence,
just as we turn our face away from something disgusting. He will NOT hear . . . He will NOT listen . . . He will NOT grant our request.
Isaiah 1:15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. (KJV)
Hosea 5:6 They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the LORD; but they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. (KJV)
Hosea 5:15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early. (KJV)
Jude 1:11-13 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. 12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. (KJV)

He will not hear; or He will hide Himself by withdrawing His gracious Presence; ignoring any prayers put up to Him; and deny an answer to them.

In this important portion of Scripture, we see the nature of God and man . . . and the high penalties of sin. Some Jewish people consider sin as actions or misdeeds done against man or the LORD, instead of man's chronic spiritual condition.
One Hebrew word used for sin is a word that translates, "We fall short," or "we miss the mark." Use the example of an archer at an archery range, who aims an arrow at a target and most often misses the bulls-eye or is slightly off course. That is how our sinful nature infects our lives. We may strive to do good, but it is impossible for us, and we fall short of doing it.

Leviticus 19:2 Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy. (KJV)
God is clearly holy in His nature, His essence, self-sufficiently, unchangeably and perfectly; and the more holy the Israelites were, the more like God they would be (and us too).

Leviticus 11:44-45 For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 45 For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. (KJV)
Leviticus 18:26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you: (KJV)
In these Passages, we SEE what God expects and demands of Israel . . . and us! His standard is perfection . . . shown by His revealed Law. We can try to live without sin, but we find that NO one is capable to live up to that standard. We ALL fall short. Knowing that we fall short of God's standard, we must help our Jewish brothers and sisters understand that there are penalties of sin. Our sins cause us to be separated from God, so that He hides His Face from us and does not hear. Mankind and his Creator are separated when we sin (Isaiah 59:1-2). But there is a much greater consequence, after we leave this Earth (Isa.66:24; Dan.12:1-2; Mat.25:31-46).

The Soul Who Sins Shall Die
Eze.18:1-4 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. (KJV)

When God established His Covenant with Moses and the people of Israel on Mt. Sinai, they cried with one voice and heart: Deut. 5:27 Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it. (KJV) . . . We will hear it and do it, but they heard but did NOT do it!
The LORD knew that their hearts and minds would eventually rebel against Him. He announced to them that some individual's sins would cause consequences to fall not only on the individual who committed the sin, but would fall onto the second, third and even the fourth generation of that individual's descendants.
In this Passage, the LORD announces, through the prophet Ezekiel, that each individual will be held accountable for his own sin. All souls belong to God . . . the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son. Each separate individual is held accountable: the one who sins will die.
The Scriptures talk about two different kinds of death:

  • Physical death, the end of life as we know it, where the spirit or soul is separated from the body, and
  • Spiritual death, or, eternal separation from God. The LORD is speaking about BOTH physical and spiritual death as a consequence of sin. Physical death is the result of the separation of mankind and God through sin. That separation is not healed at death. That separation is only healed through redemption in the Messiah (Yeshua).

Even though physical death is everywhere around us, many Jewish people do not consider life after this life such an important issue. But, the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb.4:12) sharper than any two-edged sword and can speak to those who DOUBT the TRUTH of the Scriptures and eternal afterlife.

Daniel 12:1-2 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. (KJV)

Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the Earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Judaism today does not concentrate very much on life after this life. Conservative and Orthodox Judaism do speak of life after death, but Rabbis have many disagreements as to IF there is a degree of punishment . . . short-term, long-term or eternal . . . for those who have committed sins against God. BUT . . . the Scriptures clearly testify that there IS life after death. Some shall find eternal life with God in Heaven, while others shall experience suffering, shame, sorrow and eternal scorn in the pits of Hell.

Have you ever considered Jesus' claims in the Scriptures? He does NOT lie! Ask this question to your unsaved friend: "What will be the difference between those who spend eternity with God and those who do not?" See what their response is.
Many Jewish people today will respond in a traditional way, saying "the things that we do on earth determine what our future is going to be. So, we must try to offset our evil by doing good." Dear one, NO one is able to achieve a right relationship with God! That may be a traditional thought, but it is NOT Biblical.

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. (KJV)
Rom. 7:18  For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. (KJV)
A Jew could answer in this way: "How dare you tell me that my good deeds done with a loving heart would be seen by God in such a disgusting manner?" You could respond: "The words are NOT mine, those words come from God."
The Scriptures clearly show that ANY of our good deeds are like filthy rags. Many Jewish people live thinking that their place in eternity is secured by their good deeds, but one day shall find out that it was NOT secured by good deeds. Jewish people (and ALL people) must respond in faith to Yeshua (Jesus), I pray that they will realize God's Gift of love for us is in the Messiah, NOT their good deeds . . . but instead the LORD Jesus' good deeds!

Because we are sinful by nature (inherited from Adam), even the good deeds we do cannot, in God's eyes, benefit us enough to overcome our sinful nature. The fact is, NOTHING we do of ourselves will give us an advantage to our relationship with God.

But our Almighty GOD does not leave us in a condition of hopelessness, condemned to eternal separation from Himself. From the beginning, the LORD wanted a close personal relationship with His Creation. In His covenant with Moses and the Hebrew people, He made a way to  restore the severed relationship because of sin. That means was a sacrificial system in which atonement, or covering, could be made for the sins of the people.

Leviticus Chapter 16 covers in great depth and detail the extent to which the LORD sought to make atonement for the Hebrew people's sins. Rather than examine this entire chapter, it would be good to personally summarize this Chapter, so that you can reveal its basic principles.
The High Priest is permitted, once a year, to enter into the Holy of Holies, and to sprinkle blood of a sacrificed animal upon the mercy seat. He does it twice, once for himself and once for the people of Israel. The picture revealed here demonstrates substitutionary atonement. The Hebrew word for atonement, Kippur, literally means to "cover over." The blood of the animal sacrificed in our place covers over the sin which keeps us from God. God sees the blood of the sacrificed animal, atonement is accomplished, and a relationship with God is restored.

Now see: Lev. 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul. (KJV)
This Passage contains a most important truth, and had existed in the Mosaic writings for more than 3,000 years, before any anyone was drawn to the subject. The life of the flesh is in the blood . . . the blood actually possesses a living principle, and that the life of the whole body is derived from the blood . . . this is a teaching of disclosure, and a rule which the experiments of the most accurate experts have strongly confirmed. The proper circulation of 'blood' through the whole human system was first taught by Solomon in symbolic language (Ecc.12:6-7),
and demonstrated by Dr. Harvey in 1628; though some Italian philosophers had the same idea some time before. This accurate expert was the first who fully revived the Mosaic notion of the energy of the blood; which was afterwards adopted by the celebrated Dr. John Hunter, professor of anatomy, and established by him, by a great variety of strong reasoning and accurate experiments.

Leviticus 17:11 tells us that without the shedding of blood, there can be no forgiveness of sin. Perhaps the main problem to traditional Judaism as it is practiced today is that the Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed in the year 70 of this era. Since the destruction of the Temple in Israel and its altar inside, there have been no animal sacrifices, no shedding of blood and no Yom Kippur sacrifices. So, considering what the Scriptures command, no atonement can be made.
Yet, Yom Kippur remains dominant during the High Holy Days as a time of prayer, giving to charity and repentance. But these three 'good deeds' were NEVER enough to fulfill the Biblical injunction to shed blood for the forgiveness of sin. A question you might ask your Jewish friend: "How do you find atonement, or forgiveness for your sin today, since no sacrifices are made?"
God answers the need in the Promise of a New Covenant found in Jeremiah 31:31-34.
Jer. 31:31-34 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. (KJV)

Here the Lord GOD announces the new covenant He is going to make between the house of Israel and Judah and Himself. This New Covenant would be different from the Law He established with Moses on Mt. Sinai, which was written upon tablets of stone. In its place, this New Covenant would be written upon men's minds and hearts, that they might know and be able to do the law of God. The Bible tells how would this New Covenant would come about in
Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12. When you consider these Scriptures, look mainly at verses 4-6, where we see that One was wounded for OUR transgressions, bruised for OUR iniquities, the chastisement of OUR peace was upon Him, and as it says in verse 6, "the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us ALL."
If you read the entire 53rd chapter of Isaiah to a Jew, ask them where they think that portion of Scripture comes from. They may answer, "You are reading out of the Christian New Testament, because it is talking about Jesus." Most Jews do not realize that Isaiah's prophecy was written 700 years before the Birth of Jesus. These words speak very clearly to the life, death and rejection of Messiah who would make final atonement for our sins once and for all.

He Was Pierced for Our Transgressions

Isaiah 52:13-15 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high. 14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: 15 So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
Isaiah 53:1-12 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (KJV)

How can we identify and recognize the TRUE Messiah of Israel? There are MANY specific Messianic prophecies that focus on the Coming of Messiah, His death, His resurrection and His return . . . and when you link these Passages together, they clearly present the Gospel.

You may want to write these down in your Bible. Write the first verse in this Bible chain in the front of your Bible. When you have turned to the first verse, write down the second Bible verse; when you turn to the second Bible reference, write the third Biblical reference, etc. Your Bible will contain completely an entire chain of thought, without needing to memorize all the verses.
This can be applied not only to the Jews, but to any spiritual principle or theme found throughout the Scriptures. There are other parallel verses other than the ones I list here, which you may want to add.

Recognizing that we fall short of God's standard on this Earth, we also must help our Jewish brothers and sisters understand that there are penalties of this shortfall. Our sins cause us to be separated from God, so that He hides His face from us and does not hear. Man and his Creator are separated when we sin (Isaiah 59:1-2). But there is a much greater consequence.
Eze. 18:1-4 The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. (KJV)
Each individual will be held accountable for his own sin, and each person is held accountable: the one who sins will die. The Holy Word of God tells us of two different kinds of death:

  • Physical death, cessation of life as we know it, where the spirit or soul is separated from the body, and
  • Spiritual death, or, eternal separation from God. The Lord is speaking about both physical and spiritual death as a consequence of sin. Physical death is the result of the separation of mankind and God through sin. That separation is not healed at death. That separation is only healed through redemption in Messiah.

Even though physical death is everywhere around us, many Jewish people do not consider life after this life such an important issue. But, the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, and can speak to those who doubt the TRUTH of Scripture and eternal afterlife.

(KJV)

The Bible clearly states that there is life after this life. A "few" (Mat.7:14) find eternal life with God in Heaven, but the vast majority travel the broad road of destruction with the devil, to his home in the pits of Hell!

If you read the entire 53rd Chapter of Isaiah to a Jew, and then ask them where they feel that portion of Scripture comes from . . . it is possible they will say that you were reading out of the Christian New Testament, because it is talking about Jesus. Most do not realize that Isaiah's prophecy was written 700 years before the birth of Jesus. These words speak very clearly to the life, death and rejection of Messiah who would make final atonement for our sins once and for all.
So, the question is: "How can we identify and recognize the TRUE Messiah of Israel?" There are many precise Messianic prophecies that emphasize the Coming of Messiah, His death, His resurrection and His return in the Old Testament. The Gospel is most certainly in the Old Testament!
