Types of Christ in the Old Testament

The Coats of Skin as a Type of Christ's Death

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. (KJV)

God made coats of skins. This implies the institution of animal sacrifice, which was absolutely of divine appointment, and instruction in the only acceptable mode of worship for sinful creatures, through faith in a Redeemer (Heb.9:22). The Lord Himself clothed Adam and Eve with skins, taken from animals, and taught them to make these for themselves. This implies that blood was shed on their behalf. It stands to reason then, that animal sacrifice was first introduced by God and that it was from this action on His part that Abel knew the Truth by which he was guided in presenting an accepted sacrifice to the Lord. Few types are as complete as this, in reference to the cross of Christ!

So . . . clothes came in with sin. We have absolutely NO reason to be proud of our clothes, for they are simply badges of our shame. When God made clothes for our first parents, he made them warm and strong, but coarse and very plain; not robes of scarlet, but coats of skin, not fancy but rugged. Let those that are poorly clad, learn not to complain. Having food and raiment, let them be content (1 Tim.6:8). And let those that are richly clad, learn not to make the putting on of apparel their pride.

The beasts, from whose skins Adam and Eve were clothed, were slain, not for man's food, but for sacrifice, to typify Christ, our great Sacrifice. Adam and Eve made for themselves aprons of fig leaves (Gen.3:7), a covering too narrow for them to wrap themselves in (Isa.28:20). Their 'works' were insufficient! (Eph.2:8-9).

The fig leaf clothing of Adam and Eve are just like the filthy rags of our own righteousness (Isa.64:6). God made them coats of skin, large, strong, durable, and fitted properly for them . . . such is the righteousness of Christ; therefore put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ (Rom.13:14).
